We’ve traveled to a lot of tropical destinations over the years. From Spain to Panama and the Caribbean, few can compete with the beaches of Baja California. The Baja California Peninsula has many incredible beaches from the Pacific coast to the Sea of Cortez. While the best Baja California beaches aren’t always the easiest to reach, they are definitely worth the effort to get there.

If you’re planning to take an epic road trip down the Baja Peninsula, make sure these 7 best Baja California beaches are a stop.

Playa El Requeson

Playa El Requeson is arguably the most famous beach along the Bahia de Concepcion. Located about 45 minutes outside the charming town of Mulege, you’ll quickly see why this is a paradise for RVers in the wintertime.

Playa El Requeson is easy to distinguish from other Mulege beaches because of its long sandbar that connects to an island. During low tide, you can walk across to explore the mangroves. This beach is one of the best places for beach camping in the area. Its scenic cactus-filled mountain surroundings and clear blue water are unbeatable.

Vendors will come by during the day selling ceviche, produce, fresh fish, and a local specialty almejas chocolatas (chocolate clams). Served raw with a little lime juice, hot sauce and salt, these brown bivalves are a local delicacy in Baja.

Playa El Coyote

Playa El Coyote is located along the Bahia de Concepcion. A roughly 30-minute drive from the neighboring town of Mulege. Surrounded by a desert mountain landscape this protected bay has tranquil water, great for swimming and stand-up paddle boards.

The water is also super clear making fish visible even after dark. There are plenty of beach campsites with shady palapas dotted along the shore within feet of the water. Just make sure to wake up early enough to witness an epic sunrise.

Playa Isla Coronado

To find the most beautiful beach in the pueblo magico of Loreto, you will need to hire a boat. Luckily there are many tours ready to take you out to Isla Coronado. The island is located just off the coast in the Bay of Loreto National Park, a protected habitat and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The guide will take you around the volcanic island to see interesting lava formations, abundant marine wildlife including dolphins, sea lions, birds, and the most beautiful beach. The tours last half a day. But we did meet some people who were dropped off for an overnight camping adventure. So, that might be an option if you’re ready to rough it.

The tour ends with some time at Playa Isla Coronado, a virgin white sand beach with crystal clear water. Whether you use this time to swim, snorkel, or just kick back and relax with some cerveza (BYOB). This is one of the best places to visit when you travel through Baja California Sur!

Playa Balandra

Balandra Beach has been voted the most beautiful beach in Mexico for several years in a row. On some lists, it’s been voted one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. This protected area is about 30 minutes outside of the town of La Paz in Baja California Sur.

It’s free to enter but you have to time your entry. The beach opens up to as many as 400 people daily, twice a day. The first opening is at 8:00 am and the second is at 1:00 pm. Visitors are only allowed to stay there for 4 hours maximum. Weekends are extremely popular and the spots for entry to the beach fill up quickly. We recommend going on a weekday or getting in line early on the weekends to visit. But it’s 100% worth visiting.

The shallow waters here create an incredible blue color with seven private bays to walk to. You can’t really swim here because of the water depth. But it’s a nice beach for playing in the waters, paddling, or hiking

Playa La Ventana

La Ventana is considered the kitesurfing capital of Baja. If you aren’t into kitesurfing you can still enjoy a refreshing swim in the deep blue waters here. It also has fantastic snorkeling, hot springs, and RV camping. Of our entire five months in Baja, this was one of our favorite beach camping spots.

Playa El Arbolito

Cabo Pulmo National Park is home to the only living coral reef in the Sea of Cortez. Making it a diving and snorkeling paradise. One look at the water color and pristine water clarity, and it’s easy to see why this would be one of the 7 best Baja California beaches.

The motto around Cabo Pulmo is “Bad Roads, Good People”. After driving down miles of bumpy dirt roads you will understand why. But be patient, for you will be rewarded by one of the best Baja California beaches.

If you don’t want to take a guided dive tour, Playa El Arbolito is the perfect place to enjoy this national park. A mix of rocks and white sand make up the shoreline of this beach where you can dive right into the water with your own snorkeling gear and be instantly transported into an underwater wonderland.

Playa Cerritos

Playa Cerritos is not just one of the best Baja California beaches, but also one of the most popular. This hippie surfer paradise, in the low-key beach town of Los Cerritos, is a mecca for surfers each winter. This long stretch of beach outside of Todos Santos has consistently great waves with surf shops and schools ready to get you out on the water.

After a day of hitting the waves, take in a stunning sunset at one of the beach bars or seafood restaurants. There are loads to do and see in Cerritos Beach and nearby Todos Santos other than visiting some of the best Baja California beaches.

Playa del Palmas

Playa del Palmas is one of the many beautiful beaches outside the pueblo magico of Todos Santos. It takes some guts to get there, as you drive down a short bumpy, and soft sand road. But once you’re there you’re instantly rewarded with the prettiest secluded beach lined with palm trees spring-fed from a nearby oasis. The steady water source even attracts wild horses to the beach!

This beach is pristine, there are no services and you have to walk about 10 minutes from the sandy area from your car. It’s truly a dream come true and most certainly, one of the best Baja California beaches.

What makes the beaches of Baja California so beautiful is the stunning desert landscape juxtaposed with the water. A road trip down the peninsula is the adventure of a lifetime and visiting its many beaches is a must. Don’t be afraid to go off the beaten path to discover the best beaches of Baja!
