Is Harry Potter Studios London Actually Worth Visiting?

One experience I was on the fence about booking when we were planning our summer trip to the UK was Harry Potter Studios London. After all, studio tour tickets to visit the place where all eight Harry Potter films were filmed and produced are around $115 per person—not a cheap experience!
As Harry Potter enthusiasts, we knew we would love it, but we wondered if the cost was truly worth it and if it would be that different from other Harry Potter experiences we’d been to in the past.
We visited Harry Potter World at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure in Orlando more than 20 times as annual passholders. Naturally, I worried this studio tour would be a similar experience and thus not worth the cost.
Thankfully, I can say that after visiting both, Harry Potter Studios in London is worth it and is completely unique from other Harry Potter attractions.

Warner Bros Studio Tour London Tickets
Those aged five and up are required to have individual tickets to visit London’s Warner Bros Studios. They can be purchased in one of two ways:
- Online directly from the Studio’s website (~$79)
- From an official tour company like Viator or GetYourGuide (~$115)
Tickets cost £58.50 (roughly $79) if booked online directly from the studio’s website. You are still responsible for getting to the studios by car, taxi, train, or bus on your own.
Costs will vary depending on your method of arriving, but train rides with the free shuttle (more on that shortly) are around £16.20, or $22 one way. Combined, this ticket method will cost around $123 round-trip per person.
Warner Bros Studio Tour London Tickets booked from third-party companies like Viator and GetYourGuide typically cost around $114 to $115 and include round-trip transportation by bus from Central London to Watford. There are no extra costs associated with this option.
No matter how you choose to purchase your tickets, book them at least two to three weeks in advance. Visiting Harry Potter Studios is one of the most popular things to do on a London trip. Tickets will sell out.
It’s also worth mentioning that they do not offer in-person tickets. All tickets must be booked in advance online before arriving.

We booked our Studio tour with GetYourGuide because it included round-trip transportation from London to Watford, where the studio is located.
With traffic, it’s about an hour and a half bus ride from London, which is longer than a train ride would have been. However, it made the entire process super easy to navigate, especially since our visit coincided with a Tube strike.
During our trip, metro and train operations were limited, making the DIY route to Harry Potter Studios London much more complicated.
If you buy your own entrance tickets to Harry Potter Studios London you can take the train from London to Watford Junction Railway Station. Warner Bros Harry Potter Studios provides free shuttles every 30 minutes from Watford Junction Railway Station, which you can track here.
The bus ride and train ride should take around 45 minutes to 1 hour combined to get from London to the studio’s entrance.

Now that we have tickets and how to get to Harry Potter Studios out of the way, let’s talk about the fun stuff—what it’s like visiting Harry Potter Studios London!
The Warner Bros Studios in Watford is where the original Harry Potter movies were made from 2000 to 2010. It’s where the actors and the thousands of directors, producers, and talented artists behind the costumes, props, sets, and effects came to make the “magic happen”.
Rather than let this studio go to waste after filming wrapped, they turned it into a curated studio tour displaying the real costumes, props, filming secrets, and behind-the-scenes tricks that made these movies come to life.
Essentially, the London Warner Bros Harry Potter Studios Tour is a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the films. You don’t feel like you’ve been transported to Hogwarts as you would at Harry Potter World in Orlando. Rather, you’re pulling back the curtain on the making of the movies.
Which is honestly SO cool.
The Harry Potter Studios London tour starts with a host sharing a short film featuring several actors from the movie, which shares ground rules and the lay of the land. It explains the seven main areas of the studio to explore:
- Sets
- Props
- Costumes
- SFX & VFX
- Creature Effects
- Art Department
- The Backlot Stage
From there, you’re welcomed into the real Great Hall shown in seven of the eight films. The studio seems small when you see it on a map, but it’s not! We used every minute of our four hours with just a short break for lunch near the Backlot Stage and wished we had more time to explore.
The rooms are themed by topic, and all props, special effects, and sets were the originals used in the movie. The first room you walk into is the set’s stage. It’s one of the largest spaces that blends into props and costumes.
You can walk into Dumbeldoor’s office, visit the Gryffendor common room and bed chambers, peek inside Hagrid’s hut, admire the Weasley’s home, or Harry’s room under the cupboard.
Each space felt so magical, just as you picture in the movie, but they often revealed the filming secrets behind it. You could see the open rafters at the top of the Weasley’s home, see how small Hagrid’s hut actually was, or the temporary exterior made from wood of the sets that were hidden during filming.
So much of what we saw on film was a visual trick, which was especially apparent in the creature effects and special effects areas. You can walk through the Ministry of Magic, the Forbidden Forest, and Gringotts Bank!
If you want, you can hop on a broom and take a ride through London in the green screen room. I didn’t personally do it because I felt rushed for time in my four hours, but it looked like a blast.
The detail and craftsmanship that went into these movies were truly outstanding. There are signs throughout with tour guides in specific areas sharing insider knowledge and answering any questions you may have.
Seeing all that had to happen off-screen to make the movies millions love so dearly gave me an entirely new appreciation for the films. Especially for the young actors who were just 11 when they began filming!
The backlot was one of the best areas of the studio tour because you could go inside Mrs. Sprout’s greenhouse, the Dursleys’ home on Privett Drive, and the Hogwarts bridge.
It is also the dining area. They have a restaurant serving butterbeer, butterbeer ice cream, or lunch, which was mostly fast-food style burgers, hot dogs, and fries.
The food was definitely underwhelming and expensive, so I recommend bringing your own. You can purchase a special afternoon tea experience if interested, but you definitely would need more than four hours here to include that.
Is the Harry Potter Studios Tour London worth it?
The real question isn’t whether or not it’s worth it (because it is), it’s which method of experiencing the Studio tour is best for you.
Pros and Cons of getting your own tickets vs a bus tour
We took the bus tour and were glad we did given the tube strike. It was also the more cost-effective route. Transportation would have cost us around $44 round trip, plus the ticket entrances, putting the total around $122 more than the $114 we paid with GetYourGuide.
However, we would have liked more than four hours to spend at Harry Potter Studios. It was such a long day filled with excitement, but we spent nearly the same amount of time on the bus as we did in the studio.

If you want more time to explore the Studios, then you would probably benefit from taking your own transportation. However, if you aren’t that into Harry Potter or don’t like long days at very stimulating places, then four hours might be the perfect amount of time for you.
Hopefully, by now, you can see that visiting Harry Potter Studios London is absolutely worth it! It’s such a unique opportunity to learn about the films and get up close and personal to the sets, costumes, props, and countless other effects that were used to make the movies.
We cannot wait to return (yes, we’d happily go again) and still feel it was one of the best things we did on our trip. If you’re on the fence, don’t be! Book this experience, I promise you’ll love it!
