Things to know about the best restaurants in San Juan
Before we dive in, here are a few important things to know about restaurants in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Many casual restaurants in San Juan operate on a first come first serve basis. However, most finer dining restaurants in San Juan require reservations and can be booked out weeks in advance. So, plan accordingly.

Food and drinks are surprisingly expensive in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Since Puerto Rico is tied to our monetary system as a U.S. Territory, inflation has impacted the island as much, if not more, than the mainland United States. Don’t expect many cheap meals when dining out here, even at casual restaurants.
We’ll share pricing expectations for each San Juan restaurant on this list with the following icons. A * indicates farm-to-table and the restaurant uses local or homegrown organic products.
$ – $5 – $10 USD per plate
$$ – $10 – $25 USD per plate
$$$ – $25 – $45 USD per plate
$$$$ – $45 USD + per plate/per fixed menu
Tipping is the same in Puerto Rico as in the United States. 15% to 20% is customary for food or drink orders. Most San Juan restaurants will accept credit cards or debit cards. We didn’t visit a single establishment that was cash only. We always had cash on us, just in case though.

Below you’ll find a map of all of the best restaurants in San Juan, Puerto Rico including a few I don’t talk about in this list.
Best restaurants in Old San Juan
Below you’ll find the best restaurants in Old San Juan. This neighborhood is extremely popular amongst tourists. We stayed three nights in Old San Juan and after a day or two had trouble finding great spots to eat. We encourage you to expand your dining experiences beyond the fortified city into the rest of San Juan. However, if you need a good place to eat in Old San Juan this list should have you covered.

Spiga
Google map the location | Price range: $
Spiga is a tiny restaurant and cafe in Old San Juan. Unassuming from the outside, it’s easy to miss its incredible housemade pastries baked daily. We tried several things on their menu, including their daily savory pastry made with pesto, salmon, and feta. Plus, a guava roll, and a sourdough breakfast sandwich.

The savory roll was to die for, we loved it so much that we got a second and went back for breakfast the following day! Their coffee is also on point. As if that wasn’t enough, it’s a women-owned business! 💪🏼
Verde Mesa*
Google map the location | Website | Price range: $$$ | Reservations highly encouraged
Verde Mesa is a small farm-to-table restaurant oozing with charm. Its quirky, eclectic interior will welcome you while its outstanding flavorful dishes please your palate. The menu is a mix of cuisines focusing on fresh local ingredients and seafood-forward plates.
The indigenous ingredients used by Taíno of Puerto Rico inspire much of the chef’s mostly pescatarian menu. Its Verde Mesa Rice is one of its most popular dishes and is 100% vegetarian, making this a top pick for vegetarians or vegans. We didn’t get to dine here on our trip but it’s at the top of our list for when we return.
Pio Pio*
Google map the location | Website | Price range: $$-$$$ | Reservations highly encouraged
Who doesn’t want upscale food with a little bubbly? We love a good champagne and wine bar and Pio Pio hit the spot. This tiny restaurant has a small front room for dining along with a large bar for high-top seating, with a really fun menu. Think oysters and champagne, roasted veggies and a glass of red, or in our case, a tuna dog.

Pio Pio house ages their tuna dog topping it with roe and a homemade relish. It was super unique and definitely unlike anything we’d tasted before! Forgive the pink hue of the picture, the front room is lit by pink neon lighting. 😊
Marmalade*
Google map the location | Website | Price range: $$$$ | Reservations highly encouraged
Marmalade is a high-end fine-dining restaurant in the heart of Old San Juan. This is the place to go if you’re celebrating something special and looking for a splurge while indulging in an incredible meal. They have a pre-fix menu that can include a wine pairing if desired. Their menu focuses on fresh ingredients. The meat is hormone-free and/or pasture-raised and the dishes draw from cuisines across the world.
Marmalade was highly recommended to us by several people on our trip. But due to timing and budget, we simply weren’t able to make it. However, it’s on our list for our next trip!
Cafe Botanico*

Google map the location | Website | Price range: $$
Café Botanico is a new restaurant in the Old San Juan neighborhood that has amazing bowls and salads. It’s a bit like Chipotle, where you design your bowl choosing a base (some type of rice with beans), a protein, and a side dish.
I got bacalao (salted cod) with gandules (a type of Puerto Rican bean) and rice. Dennis ordered the chicken with a five-bean salad. Both dishes were awesome and affordable. This is a great spot for a no-frills lunch, breakfast, or coffee. Their teas were great too!
Chocobar Cortés
Google map the location | Website | Price range: $$
Chocobar Cortés is the brainchild of the Cortés Chocolate Company, the largest and oldest chocolate maker in Puerto Rico. Its history is super unique, dating back to the late 1800s when the founder was repaid a debt via a chocolate press.
The company became the most coveted chocolate in Puerto Rico and even helped improve literacy on the island when books and reading weren’t widely available. They have a full food menu, including brunch all day long, along with cocktails and sweet treats. We came here for the hot chocolate though.

Hot chocolate in Puerto Rico is served with a piece of cheese. The cheese is placed in the hot chocolate to be a gooey, savory treat at the end. It sounds like an odd combination, but works. We loved everything about this Old San Juan restaurant – it’s story, it’s ambiance, and it’s food!
Best restaurants in San Juan City
Now, let’s talk about some of the best restaurants in San Juan outside of the old city. When I say “San Juan City” this includes downtown, Santurce, Condado, Ocean Park, and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Café Regina
Google map the location | Website | Price range: $$$
Café Regina is a super chic breakfast and lunch spot in the very trendy Condado neighborhood. This place is not only cute, but the coffee, fruit teas, and menu items are fantastic, creative, and fresh. Dennis ordered the spicy egg sandwich which was massive and so fluffy. I got the salmon toast which had lemon peel and coconut crisps on top for such a unique texture and brightness.

We loved everything about this spot and wish we had more time to go back for more!
Sur Barra Nikkei*
Google map the location | Website | Price range: $$-$$$ | Reservations highly encouraged
Sur Barra Nikkei is an homage to cuisines from Perú and Japan. It’s Chef Rafa’s first solo restaurant after working in several prestigious restaurants across San Juan. Most of the menu is served in nigiri-like bite sizes with intense flavors and varied textures. The chef creates harmony between the two very different cuisines, using ingredients like quinoa and leche de tigre, but with a Japanese presentation.
If you want something different, fresh, and new this is definitely one of the best restaurants in San Juan to visit!
Vianda*
Google map the location | Website | Price range: $$$ | Reservations highly encouraged
Vianda is one of the best restaurants in San Juan, Puerto Rico right now. Partly inspired by Spanish cuisine, the restaurant uses local Puerto Rican ingredients to blend the two cultures. It’s farm-to-table, meaning the ingredients come from local growers and features and the menu changes frequently.

The restaurant is run by the couple and chefs Guzmán and Dill, who both worked at Blue Hill in New York, arguably one of the best restaurants in the world. Their experience in fine dining and culinary excellence comes through. We loved everything we got, from the croquetas de morcilla (blood sausage and pig head croquettes), to the papas bravas, and rabbit. This is a must-visit restaurant when coming to San Juan!
JungleBird
Google map the location | Website | Price range: $$$
JungleBird is largely known for its incredible tiki cocktails and funky atmosphere, but this bar and restaurant near La Placita in the Santurce neighborhood also has fantastic food! The head chef formerly worked at Vianda and is creating really flavorful upscale dishes but in a casual and approachable way.

Come for the drinks, stay for the food! The menu changes frequently so there will always be something new to try.
Santaella
Google map the location | Website | Price range: $$$ | Reservations highly encouraged
Santaella is an upscale Puerto Rican restaurant owned and operated by Chef Jose Santaella. The space is very modern and intimate while the menu is inspired by Puerto Rico’s Spanish roots. You’ll see things like croquetas, morcilla, and empadillas with inspiration from other cuisines, too.
Due to timing and budget, we didn’t get to dine at Santaella, but if you want an upscale Puerto Rican focused meal, this is the spot to do it.
Cocina al Fondo*
Google map the location | Website | Price range: $$$ | Reservations highly encouraged
Cocina al Fondo is a new restaurant in the Santurce neighborhood by James Beard award-winning Chef Natalia Vallejo. The restaurant is inside an old wooden home that has been lovingly restored with the cutest outdoor patio.

Her restaurant has consistently been voted the best new restaurant by several prestigious publishing companies, including the New York Times. After visiting we can vouch, that it’s indeed amazing. Don’t miss out on their awesome cocktails and great wine list either!
Orujo, Taller de Gastronomía*
Google map the location | Price range: $$$ | Reservations highly encouraged
Orujo, Taller de Gastronomía isn’t your typical fine dining restaurant. Despite having an incredible tasting menu of 20 gastronomic dishes inspired by the Caribbean, its funky decor makes this outstanding dining experience feel more relaxed and inviting.
The pre-fix menu is pricy at $155 per person, but its reputation precedes it. You can expect loads of different foods you likely haven’t had before, many of which highlight specialties across the island.
La Casita Blanca
Google map the location | Website | Price range: $$
La Casita Blanca is an institution in San Juan. Located in the Carolina neighborhood not far from the airport, this spot is off the tourist path. Known for its traditional home-cooked Puerto Rican food, you are instantly swept away by its charming decor that feels like you’re in Abuela’s house. The menu is written on a chalkboard and changes based on today’s ingredients.

Popular items are the mofongo, one of the most popular Puerto Rican dishes, and the beef stew. We got both and really enjoyed it! Don’t forget to finish off your meal with coconut tres leches. 🍰
Miramar Food Truck Park
Google map the location | Website | Price range: $$$
The last spot on the list of the 15 best restaurants in San Juan is Miramar Food Truck Park. This is a new outdoor food haul that has several different food trucks to order from in the Santurce neighborhood. There’s everything from burgers and fries to pizzas, tacos, and more traditional Puerto Rican food.
It’s a fun spot that often has live music with tables for everyone to grab what their craving and enjoy a meal outdoors. It’s definitely a fun spot and an affordable meal in the city. If you’re visiting San Juan soon let me know what restaurant on this list you liked most. I would also love to hear if you have recommendations for other great places to eat in San Juan for our future trips.

Okay all of these look so delicious, although I’m not too sure how I feel about the hot chocolate with cheese situation. It’s good to know that the restaurant prices are more comparable to the US, I really hope to get back to Puerto Rico soon!
Haha, not gonna lie, it wasn’t my favorite! Dennis liked it though. Yes, prices shocked us. Hope you get back there soon!
