One of the hardest parts of planning a San Juan vacation is figuring out where to stay in San Juan. The city is massive and given its title as a premier vacation destination, there are endless options of hotels and vacation rentals.

After planning our week-long trip to San Juan, we decided to stay in a hotel and vacation rental in two different neighborhoods to get a feel for the better choice.

We quickly learned that where and how you stay depends on the type of trip you are looking for, your budget, and the length of your vacation. We thoroughly enjoyed both of our stays, but it’s not necessarily where we would stay again if we returned.

To help you understand where to stay in San Juan we created this guide to San Juan neighborhoods to help you choose the best accommodations for your budget and travel goals.

The best part of San Juan to stay in on vacation

Most visitors to San Juan will want to stay in one of five neighborhoods:

  • Old San Juan 🏛️
  • Condado 🏝️
  • Ocean Park 🏝️
  • Miramar 🏙️
  • Isla Verde 🏝️

Each neighborhood has a unique vibe and benefits to staying there, which I’ll cover in better detail below. However, if I could only choose one place to stay in San Juan, I’d select Condado. Its central location in the city, access to the beach, vibe, and proximity to Santurce (like San Juan’s downtown) can’t be beaten. However, this area is pricey so it may not be the right for you.

Old San Juan is the historic part of San Juan, Puerto Rico dating back to the 1600s. The buildings are colorful, the streets are cobblestone, and it’s where many of the top attractions in the city are. However, this neighborhood is isolated from the rest of San Juan, is very touristic, and is rather small. We stayed there for three nights and felt like our options were slim for places to eat and drink after two nights.

Santurce isn’t a place most tourists stay. It’s still very up and coming and isn’t always safe to wander around at night. However, I do recommend visiting this area. It’s home to some of San Juan’s best restaurants and we ate and drank there multiple nights on our trip. Just be mindful when visiting at night and it’s recommended you don’t walk from spot to spot, but rather Uber or drive to your end destination.

Where to stay if you only have 1 or 2 days in San Juan

If you are into history and will be spending most of your time in Old San Juan on a one or two-day trip, I would stay in Old San Juan. You’ll be Ubering here anyway and it’s convenient to walk from site to site.

If you prefer a beach vacation for your short stay and only plan to walk around Old San Juan for an afternoon, I would stay in Miramar or Condado. Miramar is a bit off the tourist path but has a lot of chain hotels like Hyatt.

We stayed at Hyatt Place because we had points with the hotel helped us visit San Juan on a budget. There was a free shuttle at the hotel that would take us to Escabron Beach, Old San Juan, and the popular Distrito T-Mobile across the street.

Where to stay if you want a beach vacation

If you want a beach vacation, you’ll want to stay in a beachfront hotel in the Condado, Ocean Park, or Isla Verde neighborhoods.

Condado is my top beach pick if you want a beach vacation, but its trendy and central location makes it an expensive stay. Ocean Park is slightly more affordable and has loads of cute Airbnbs just a block from the beach if you’re on a budget.

If you want an all-inclusive getaway with nice hotel amenities stay in Isla Verde. This is the neighborhood closest to the airport and furthest from things like Old San Juan and Santurce, which puts it at the bottom of my list. However, it’s known for its beautiful beaches and is still a nice place to stay in San Juan.

Where to stay in San Juan if you are on a budget

If you’re on a budget and visiting San Juan I would recommend staying in an Airbnb a few blocks from the beach in Condado or Ocean Park, or in the Miramar neighborhood. Getting off the beach, even by a block can save hundreds per night.

We’ll share budget accommodations in each location if you’re still unsure of where to stay in San Juan.

Airbnb or a hotel: what’s better for a San Juan vacation?

We stayed in a vacation rental and a hotel during our stay and enjoyed aspects of both. The Airbnb gave us more space and amenities like a full kitchen and laundry. It was nice we could wash our clothes after sweating so much during the day. Airbnbs are often more affordable, too. We found Airbnbs starting at $100 in less desirable locations to $300 in more prime locations.

One night our Airbnb in Old San Juan did not have water. The city is notorious for shutting off water during heavy rains or when cruise ships are at port. The outage lasted all night and is unfortunately a reality of traveling here. Some hotels will have water reserves during outages like this, but it’s a good idea to ask the hotel specifically before booking.

The hotel offered different amenities like a pool, bar, and shuttle that took us to popular locations across the city. However, hotels are much more expensive in San Juan costing $250 on the low end to $400 or more for an all-inclusive or luxury stay.

The Airbnb was nice because of its cost and central location in Old San Juan but hotels win here for me. When we return, I will stay in a mid-range hotel along the beach with amenities like a pool, bar, and shuttle service.

Where to stay in Old San Juan

Old San Juan looks big on a map but it’s a small neighborhood. We walked the entire area in one day and were shocked at how much you could see in a short period. As previously mentioned, I would only stay in Old San Juan if I had just one or two nights in San Juan.

If you are staying three or more nights, I would stay in a different neighborhood and just Uber or take a shuttle into Old San Juan to explore for the day.

It’s not a bad neighborhood by any means, it’s just further out from the rest of San Juan and there isn’t much to do within walking distance.
